Nicaragua

Land of Lake and Vulcanoes !

The name Nicaragua comes from “Nicarao Cali”, a famous indigenous tribe chief who was very influential at the time of the Spanish conquest. It is the largest country in Central America and borders Costa Rica and Honduras.

The civil war and its struggles are now part of history. Nicaragua is a peaceful democratic nation today, with friendly citizens eager to promote their country and strengthen their economy through the development of tourism. The folklore and culture are very rich, with many festivals and carnivals taking place throughout the year all over the nation. The highlights are the country’s stunning landscapes (lakes, volcanoes, beaches) and the superb colonial cities. Nicaragua has become more and more popular with North American tourists who have coined the country as “the new Costa Rica”. It is definitely a destination on the rise.

Colonial Cities

Granada is the second largest city of Nicaragua after the capital Managua, but it is surely the most important in terms of history and touristim. The colonial centre boasts dozens of churches, convents, museums and art galleries. From just a short distance away, it is a delight to navigate through “las islitas”, a complex of 365 lake islets formed by a gigantic eruption of Volcano Mombacho 20.000 years ago. The second largest colonial city, Leon, was founded under the name “Santiago de los caballeros de Leon”. The city’s cathedral (Central America’s largest), the historic centre and the house where famous poet Ruben Dario lived, are all Unesco World Heritage sites.

Lakes & Volcanoes

Nicaragua has more than 20 volcanoes, several of them are still active today. Valleys of cooled lava and smoking craters make for spectacular “out of this world” landscapes. They present the perfect opportunity for stunning hikes with breathtaking views of the Nicaraguan altiplano. The most visited volcanoes are the Masaya (one of the most active), Mombacho (home to an exceptional fauna and flora) and Cerro Negro. Lake Nicaragua (8624 square kilometers) is the second largest lake in Latin America after lake Titicaca. This small fresh water sea stretches all the way to the edges of the Pacific Ocean, and flows down to the Caribbean Sea via the San Juan river. Lake Nicaragua was originally linked to lake Managua, which is located Northwest of present Nicaragua, and together they formed a vast oceanic bay. A violent volcanic eruption then separated the bay to form the 2 lakes and enclose them into the continent. They are currently connected to the Tipitapa river.
