Guatemala

A tiny land of contrasts !

Photography will become your hobby, because discovering Guatemala also means taking pictures that you will have “stolen” from the corner of a street, a typical market, a ceremony, an architecture or a rural scene… The inhabitants are charming, friendly and will be happy to share their thousand-year-old customs with you.

Of course, it is worth mentioning the lost Mayan Cities, preserved deep in the rainforest. By visiting one of the most spectacular sites in Guatemala (more than 40 in the country), including the famous Tikal, Yaxha, Naranjo or El Ceibal, you will feel like an Indiana Jones of the 21st century. While discovering stone temples buried in a thick, virgin jungle where monkeys and toucans welcome you…rare spectacles to be enjoyed without moderation.

You can’t miss a cruise aboard local boats on Lake Atitlan or on Lake Petèn surrounded by majestic volcanoes, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The unique beauty of the natural pools of Semuc Champey will leave you perplexed and your shots will turn an incredible palette of green in this natural jewel.

The colonial city of Antigua, a pure diamond and a World Heritage Site jewel with its cobblestone streets, traditional markets and boutique hotels hold precious treasures of the Spanish colonial heritage.

One of the best preserved colonial cities in Latin America.

Don’t miss to visit a coffee plantation with the flavor of Guatemalan Arabica, one of the best in the world. Guatemala is a pure wonder of colors and without a doubt the most authentic Central American country…

Incentive Must-Dos

  • Guatemala
Chichicastenango is a quaint mountain village located north of Lake Atitlan, in the heart of the Guatemalan highlands. It is the kingdom of the Maya ethnic group “Quiché”, who are known for their commercial skills. The visit starts at its colorful cemetery and ends with the famous Church of Santo Tomas, where the only remaining edition of the “Popol Vuh” (the sacred Mayan book) was found. After the Sunday mass, the « cofradias » (Mayan religious brotherhoods) present offerings to the Gods and then burn them on the Church steps, which is followed by a procession through the market. Chichicastenango is the largest and most authentic traditional market in Central America. It attracts crowds of highlanders, wishing to buy or sell numerous products (meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, bags, shoes, wooden masks, jade jewelry, music instruments, and everything you can think of). A true festival of colors, scents and sounds!

Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlán was created 85.000 years ago from the collapse of the gigantic volcano “Los Chocoyos”. It is 18 km long and 8 km wide, and surrounded by 3 volcanoes (San Pedro, Atitlan and Toliman). Located in the Guatemalan highlands, it is the deepest lake in Central America (up to 340m deep). The ethnic groups Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel, that live on its shores, believe it is one of the entrances to their spiritual “infra-world”, Xibalba. Atitlan is described as one of the most breathtaking sights in the world, and Aldous Huxley famously wrote of it: “Lake Atitlan, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful lake on Earth”.

Animals are all around you : monkeys, coatis, ocelots, toucans and parrots… You will discover many squares, acropolis, temples and palaces graced with pillars bearing hieroglyphic inscriptions. From the top of the 65m high Temple IV, the view of the jungle as far as the eye can see is unforgettable. At the peak of its glory, 8th century AD, Tikal was the most powerful kingdom in the Mayan World. A mysterious civilization that worshiped the sun, whose kings were equal to the gods and inspired terror, where the refinement of advanced knowledge in astronomy, hydrology and architecture, coincided with the brutality of war and human sacrifice.
