Le centre colonial compte des dizaines d'\u00e9glises, de couvents, de mus\u00e9es et de galeries d'art. \u00c0 une courte distance, il est agr\u00e9able de naviguer \u00e0 travers \"las islitas\", un ensemble de 365 \u00eelots lacustres form\u00e9s par une gigantesque \u00e9ruption du volcan Mombacho il y a 20 000 ans.\n\nLeon, la deuxi\u00e8me plus grande ville coloniale, a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e sous le nom de \"Santiago de los caballeros de Leon\". Les vall\u00e9es de lave refroidie et les crat\u00e8res fumants forment des paysages spectaculaires, hors du commun. Ils offrent l'occasion de faire de superbes randonn\u00e9es avec des vues \u00e0 couper le souffle sur l'altiplano nicaraguayen. Les volcans les plus visit\u00e9s sont le Masaya (l'un des plus actifs), le Mombacho (qui abrite une faune et une flore exceptionnelles) et le Cerro Negro.\n\nLe lac Nicaragua (8624 km2) est le deuxi\u00e8me plus grand lac d'Am\u00e9rique latine apr\u00e8s le lac Titicaca. Cette petite mer d'eau douce s'\u00e9tend jusqu'aux bords de l'oc\u00e9an Pacifique et se jette dans la mer des Cara\u00efbes par le fleuve San Juan.\n\nLe lac Nicaragua \u00e9tait \u00e0 l'origine li\u00e9 au lac Managua, situ\u00e9 au nord-ouest de l'actuel Nicaragua, et formait ensemble une vaste baie oc\u00e9anique. Une violente \u00e9ruption volcanique a ensuite s\u00e9par\u00e9 la baie pour former les deux lacs et les enfermer dans le continent.
