Il mesure 18 km de long et 8 km de large, et est entour\u00e9 de trois volcans (San Pedro, Atitlan et Toliman). Situ\u00e9 dans les hautes terres du Guatemala, c'est le lac le plus profond d'Am\u00e9rique centrale (jusqu'\u00e0 340 m de profondeur). Les ethnies Tz'utujil et Kaqchikel, qui vivent sur ses rives, pensent qu'il est l'une des entr\u00e9es de leur \"inframonde\" spirituel, Xibalba. Le lac Atitlan est d\u00e9crit comme l'un des sites les plus \u00e9poustouflants au monde, et Aldous Huxley a \u00e9crit \u00e0 son sujet : \"Le lac Atitlan, me semble-t-il, touche \u00e0 la limite du pittoresque autoris\u00e9, avec en plus plusieurs volcans immenses.
